Quick Answer
Forgely's Screen Recorder runs entirely in your browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave) using the WebRTC Screen Capture API — no software to install, no account, no upload to any server. Recordings save directly to your device as WebM files. It supports full-screen, window, or tab capture, with optional microphone and system audio. It is completely free with no time limit.

How It Works

Does Forgely's Screen Recorder require installing any software?
No. Forgely's Screen Recorder runs entirely in your browser using the Screen Capture API (WebRTC) — a browser technology built into modern browsers. No download, no plugin, no extension, and no account is required. It works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Brave on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Safari on macOS has limited support for browser-based screen capture.
How does the browser screen recorder work technically?
Forgely's Screen Recorder uses the browser's Screen Capture API (getDisplayMedia) to capture your screen, a window, or a browser tab. The MediaRecorder API then encodes the captured stream into a video file in your browser. No data is sent to any server — recording happens entirely on your device. When you stop recording, the video file is saved directly to your local computer through a browser download prompt.
What can I record with it?
You can record: your entire screen, a specific application window, or a specific browser tab. When you click Start Recording, your browser shows a system prompt asking you to choose what to share. Select the appropriate option and the recording begins immediately.
Does the screen recorder work on mobile devices?
Browser-based screen recording using the Screen Capture API is not supported on mobile browsers (iOS Safari, Android Chrome). To record your mobile screen, use your device's built-in screen recording feature (iOS Control Center or Android Settings) or a mobile screen recording app.

Features

Can I record audio along with the screen?
Yes. Forgely's Screen Recorder can capture system audio (the sounds playing on your computer) and/or microphone audio simultaneously with the screen recording. You will be prompted to allow microphone access and to include system audio. If you record only a window rather than a tab, system audio may not be available depending on your operating system.
Can I record my webcam alongside the screen?
Yes. The screen recorder supports picture-in-picture webcam overlay — you can enable webcam capture alongside the screen recording. This is useful for tutorial videos where you want your face visible while demonstrating a process. You will be prompted to allow camera access when you enable webcam recording.

Formats & Limits

What file format does the recording save in?
The recorded video is saved as a WebM file, the standard output of browser-based MediaRecorder recordings. WebM files are compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Edge, VLC, and most modern video players. If you need an MP4 file for broader compatibility — for uploading to YouTube, social media, or sharing — convert WebM to MP4 using a free converter like Handbrake or an online converter.
Is there a time or file size limit?
There is no enforced time limit. However, very long recordings produce large files that your browser must hold in memory. For recordings over 30 minutes, memory requirements can become significant. If you need to record very long sessions, download the file in segments or consider OBS Studio.
How do I use the Forgely Screen Recorder step by step?
Five steps: (1) Open Forgely's Screen Recorder in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Brave. (2) Choose your recording options — microphone, system audio, and webcam on or off. (3) Click Start Recording. Your browser will ask what to share — choose Entire Screen, Window, or Tab. (4) Record your content. (5) Click Stop Recording. The video file automatically downloads to your computer as a WebM file. Open it immediately to verify the recording.

Privacy

Is the recording uploaded to Forgely's servers?
No. Your recording never leaves your device. The entire recording process — capture, encoding, and download — happens in your browser using only local resources. Forgely's servers are not involved in the recording process at all. Your recordings remain completely private.
Is the Screen Recorder free?
Yes — completely free. No account, no subscription, no credit card. Open the Forgely Screen Recorder in any supported browser and start recording immediately.

Comparisons

How does this compare to OBS Studio?
OBS Studio is a powerful, free, open-source desktop recording and streaming application with extensive customization — multiple scenes, source overlays, real-time filters, streaming to Twitch/YouTube, and high-quality encoding. It requires installation and configuration. Forgely's browser recorder is simpler and requires zero setup. For casual recording (quick tutorials, bug reports, demos), Forgely is faster. For professional streaming or production-quality recordings, OBS is the right tool.
How does this compare to Loom?
Loom is a screen recording service with cloud hosting, automatic link sharing, viewer analytics, and a browser extension. Its free tier limits videos to 5 minutes. Forgely's screen recorder is a purely local tool — it records and saves directly to your device without cloud hosting or sharing features, and has no time limits on its free tier. Forgely is better for private recordings you want to keep locally; Loom is better for quickly sharing videos with a link.
